Didyma – The Sanctuary of Apollo In ancient times, Didyma was one of the most important religious centers of the Ionian world, closely connected to the nearby city of Miletus by a Sacred Road used for ceremonial processions. Pilgrims and oracles would travel this road to reach the Temple of Apollo, seeking divine guidance from one of the most famous oracles of the ancient Greek world—second only to Delphi. The Temple of Apollo at Didyma was a magnificent structure designed in the Hellenistic Period, renowned for its grand scale and architectural sophistication. Even though construction continued for centuries, the temple was never fully completed, leaving behind an awe-inspiring ruin that still conveys its former grandeur. Massive marble columns, intricate carvings, and the remains of the oracle chamber invite visitors to imagine the spiritual and cultural significance this sanctuary once held.

Miletus – Ancient City Summary Miletus, located near the modern city of Aydın in western Turkey, was one of the most powerful and prosperous cities of ancient Ionia. It was a major center of philosophy, science, and trade, home to famous thinkers such as Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes. The city had four harbors that made it a key maritime and commercial hub in antiquity. Among its impressive ruins are the Theater of Miletus, the Temple of Athena, the Roman Baths of Faustina, and the Agora. Miletus played a vital role in the spread of Greek culture and ideas throughout the Mediterranean and remains a significant archaeological site that reflects the intellectual and architectural achievements of the ancient world.

Its streets intersect at right angles, creating an orderly and harmonious structure that reflects the rational spirit of Greek urban design. Among its most notable remains are the Temple of Athena Polias, dedicated to the city’s patron goddess and designed by the famous architect Pytheos; the Theater, Agora, Bouleuterion and gymnasium.
