Itinerary
1
Stop 1
Start the day in the quiet town of Santa Maria del Tule, home to the widest tree on Earth. The Tule Tree is a Montezuma cypress over 2,000 years old, with a trunk so massive it requires more than 30 people with outstretched arms to encircle it.
2
Stop 2
Marvel at one of Mexico's most surreal natural wonders — a series of petrified waterfalls and mineral-rich pools perched 1,500 meters above the Oaxacan valley. Formed over thousands of years by calcium carbonate deposits, these frozen cascades create a landscape unlike anything else in the country. Walk to the edge of the cliffs for panoramic views of the valley below, and take a dip in the natural pools if you wish.
3
Stop 3
Explore one of the most important Zapotec ceremonial centers in pre-Hispanic Mexico. Unlike the grand pyramids of Monte Albán, Mitla is celebrated for its extraordinary interior architecture — intricate geometric stone mosaics called grecas that cover entire walls without a single drop of death. Still an active religious site for Zapotec communities today, Mitla bridges the ancient world and the living present.
4
Stop 4
Step into a village where the art of weaving has been practiced for over 2,000 years. Watch master weavers (many of them family workshops) transform raw wool into vibrant rugs using natural dyes derived from plants, minerals, and insects — including cochineal, the same red pigment once traded across the ancient world. You'll see the entire process from raw fiber to finished textile and have the opportunity to purchase directly from the artisans.
5
Stop 5
Go behind the scenes at a family-run palenque — a traditional mezcal distillery — and discover why this spirit is so much more than just a drink. See how agave plants are harvested, roasted in underground pits, crushed by a stone wheel, fermented, and distilled using methods that have changed little in centuries. Finish with a guided tasting of different mezcal varieties straight from the source.
