For many centuries it served as the burial place of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom, including famous rulers such as Ramses II and Tutankhamun. In the elaborately designed tombs, colorful murals and hieroglyphics impress, depicting religious texts, afterlife and scenes from the life of the pharaohs.
