Stop 1
Berat Castle is one of the most important and well-preserved historical landmarks in Albania. Located on a hilltop overlooking the city of Berat, it offers stunning panoramic views of the Osum River valley and the surrounding mountains. The castle has massive stone walls and 24 watchtowers, many of which still stand. Unlike most castles, Berat Castle has a living community inside its walls. People still inhabit some of the traditional stone houses within.

The Onufri Iconographic Museum—also known as the Onufri National Museum of Icons—is a nationally significant Albanian museum located within the Cathedral of the Dormition of St. Mary inside Berat Castle. Established in 1986, it honors the 16th‑century master icon‑painter Onufri, who revolutionized Albanian religious art with his vivid colors and realism. The museum features 173 selected items—106 icons and 67 liturgical objects—drawn from a fund of about 1,500 pieces from churches and monasteries in the Berat region
