Zara Tours guides treks up the Marangu Route, which is the easiest and shortest route to Kilimanjaro's summit and is known as the "Coca Cola" or "tourist" route. This is the only route on Kilimanjaro with the comforts of solar-powered sleeping huts and comfortable beds at every camp. The huts are communal, and each bunk has a sponge mattress and pillow. Bathrooms and running water are available at the two lower huts. Basic men's and ladies' latrines are available at the last camp. All climbing groups, often from several countries around the world, share meals in dining huts providing a jovial and energetic atmosphere. Soft drinks, bottled water, and beer may be for sale at the huts. Bring small Tanzanian bills to purchase these items (prices increase with elevation). This route is usually done in 5 days, but you can do it in 6 days for better acclimatization. You can spend your extra day resting at Horombo or climbing to a basecamp below Kibo's sub peak Mawenzi.

Marangu Route, commonly known as Coca Cola route is more popular because it can be done in fewer days and has permanent sleep huts at the campsites. Summit night from Kibo Hut is steep and passes Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak. It is a shorter route with a steeper incline and less time for acclimatization it tends to have a lower summit success rate. This is the only route where the ascent and descent route is the same, thus creating more traffic. Marangu remain the best route for those who have limited time for Kilimanjaro climbing adventures. Upon arrival to Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred for overnight accommodation at your hotel. Your head guide will meet you for the short briefing about Mount Kilimanjaro and Marangu route, gear check and arrange for you to hire any equipment you may need.

All your equipment and supplies are carried by porters and a cook prepares all your meals. Unlike the Marangu Route where you sleep in huts, on the Machame you sleep in tents (tents are included), and the porters will pitch your tent for you. Meals are served in a dinner tent or on a blanket outside. This makes the Machame, which is referred to as the "Whiskey Route," better suited to more adventurous hikers, and it also rewards you with better views than other Routes. From late afternoon sunsets at Shira, to the misty revelations of Kibo's great Barranco Wall, the Machame Route offers the spunky hiker a continuous scenic slide show.

The Marangu or main route is by far the most popular way to the summit. The accommodation on the way up and down is provided in mountain huts with all the basic necessities. It usually takes 5 days/4nights for the round trip. The trek can also be taken in 6 days/5 nights to add acclimatization with an extra day at Horombo Hut. The supplementary cost for an extra day is indicated separately as an option.

The Lemosho route is considered the most scenic trail on Kilimanjaro, granting panoramic vistas on various sides of the mountain. As one of the newer routes, Lemosho is a superb choice for your climb. It is our preferred route due to its ideal balance of low crowds, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate. Wild root safaris specializes in guiding on the Lemosho route. Most of our clients climb Kilimanjaro using this route and they consistently report that they loved it. Thus, Lemosho is highly recommended.

The longest and the newest route on Mount Kilimanjaro, Northern circuit is known for excellent acclimatization and breathtaking views of the Kilimanjaro northern slopes. A very limited number of travelers have set foot on this trail, and the route is hardly ever crowded. Staying overnight in the Kilimanjaro crater is a one-of-a-kind experience. You'll be sleeping higher than most on Earth, beneath clear, starry skies, and with breathtaking views of glaciers that are diminishing yearly due to wind erosion. However, crater camping brings an added layer of challenge and risk due to the high altitude. It necessitates a realistic assessment of your physical condition and high-altitude experience. We offer this program, which includes crater camping, as an extended 10-day trek.

The Lemosho Glades Route: a remote, little used and beautiful path through the Shira Plateau. It can either be used to reach the Western Breach Route or followed by the Kibo South Circuit to join the easier Barafu route. This route is one of the few where groups are accompanied by an armed ranger as the forest around the Lemosho glades is teeming with wildlife.

Approaching from the west, we cross one of most beautiful areas on Kilimanjaro, the vast Shira Plateau, before traversing the mountain along the southern circuit. Also known as “The Whiskey Route,” Machame is one of the more scenic routes on the mountain. It is a popular route among climbers due to its high summit success rate. Allowing you to “climb high, sleep low”, this route gives your body enough time to adjust to the changes in altitude over several days. Machame offers only tented accommodation and begins at the Machame Gate at the southern base of the mountain, with the approach to the summit made from the east. You will also descend the mountain via a different route, finishing your climb at Mweka Gate. Climbs can take six or seven days; however, we would always advise choosing the longer route for the best chance of acclimatization and reaching the summit.

This non-technical Kilimanjaro route is the only route to offer permanent mountain huts at each overnight stop. Marangu, also known as the ‘Coca-Cola’ route due to its popularity in the past however, is no longer the favored choice of the modern trekkers who prefer the longer camping based routes. Marangu approaches the Kibo cone from the Southeast and ascends and descends via the same trail which has been modified to make it more climber friendly. This is the perfect choice for amateur trekkers looking to avoid camping.
